SMNE congratulates Peter Shell, Toby Williams, Brett Patrick and Ben Ramsden for their success in recent Referee assessments.
Swimming Referees are required for all meets and due to the amount of knowledge and experience required, considerable time and commitment must be invested to become one.
We are delighted that Peter Shell (Ravenswood) was recently appointed as a level 2 Referee which means that he is accredited to oversee State level meets.
Peter has been a level 1 Referee for several years and after 2 practical assessments and a 4 hour written exam Peter made the grade. “I hate exams”, joked Peter, “and I’m delighted that I passed”.
Brett (Carlile), Toby (Warringah) and Ben (Abbotsleigh) are aspiring level 1 Referees. Like Peter they also require two practical assessments and a theory exam to qualify. All three have recently passed assessments and are nearly there. “I never imagined that so much training was required in order to blow a whistle”, commented Ben.
Although Refereeing requires considerable commitment, many other crucial officiating roles are within much easier reach and can literally be achieved in less than an hour of study and practical assessment
SNSW and SMNE have pioneered the use of online training. Timekeeper, Chief Timekeeper, Marshal, Check Starter, Judge of Stroke and Inspector of Turns training is available now completely free 24/7. More courses are being planned.
One recent candidate successfully studied and passed the timekeeper course on their mobile phone on board the 07:54 from Gordon to Wynyard train!
