Child Safety at Swimming Metro North East

Swimming Metro North East (SMNE) is committed to providing children and young people with positive, inclusive and respectful experiences and to creating an environment where every child feels safe, valued and heard.

We recognise that child safety is a shared responsibility and is embedded in the way SMNE is governed, our policies and procedures, our events and programs, and the way we work with swimmers, families, coaches, officials, volunteers and clubs.

SMNE is committed to implementing the 10 Child Safe Standards under the NSW Child Safe Scheme. The Standards provide a framework for organisations to create, maintain and continuously improve child-safe cultures and practices.

SMNE’s policies and procedures document how our organisation is child safe, including our responsibilities for recruitment and screening, codes of conduct, participation and communication with children, complaints and reporting, risk management, safe physical and online environments, training and continuous improvement.

We regularly review our policies, procedures and practices to ensure they remain current and continue to reflect the Child Safe Standards.

National Integrity Framework

SMNE operates within Swimming Australia’s National Integrity Framework (NIF), which applies to activities organised or authorised by Swimming Australia and its Member Organisations.

The NIF provides clear standards for behaviour and conduct in swimming and includes policies covering:

  1. NIF Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy
  2. NIF Member Protection Policy
  3. NIF Improper Use of Drugs and Medicine Policy
  4. NIF Competition Manipulation and Sport Gambling Policy
  5. NIF Complaints, Disputes and Discipline Policy
  6. SA Code of Conduct

Sport Integrity Australia’s Child Safeguarding Policy has been developed to set clear standards of behaviour expected of those involved in sport when providing programs and services to children, as well as the behaviours that are not acceptable (Prohibited Conduct).

The policy is underpinned by the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles) and has been reviewed and endorsed by the National Office for Child Safety.

Reporting & Complaints

SMNE is committed to ensuring children, young people, families and all members feel confident to raise concerns.

Concerns are taken seriously and managed in accordance with the relevant National Integrity Framework and SMNE procedures.

You can raise a concern or make a report through our online Complaints, Compliments and Feedback form or by contacting our MPIO at: mpio@smne.org.au

Where a matter falls within the National Integrity Framework, complaints may also be made through the appropriate Swimming Australia or Sport Integrity Australia reporting pathway.

If you believe a child is in immediate danger, contact emergency services or the appropriate child protection authority.

If you are concerned that a child or young person may be at risk of significant harm, please contact the Child Protection Helpline on 132 111.

Continual Education and Training

SMNE encourages everyone involved in swimming to develop their understanding of child safety and integrity.

We encourage our Committee members, coaches, officials, volunteers, athletes and families to access relevant education and training, including the Sport Integrity Australia Child Safeguarding course.
