SMNE TEAM DELIVER 32 MEDALS
A team of 12 SMNE Open athletes attended the 2023 Singapore SC Championships 22nd-25th November held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore. Targeting this meet was part of the SMNE strategic plan for 2023-2025 providing our Open Athletes with a pathway to international racing and the opportunity to test themselves against Singapore’s best.Â
The extremely high level within Australia creates a limit on how many swimmers experience heats and finals on a regular basis at national level – this meet saw all our swimmers undertake heats, finals and relays each day – swimming up to 12 races over 4 days.
The competition in Singapore was exactly what our swimmers needed. The standard was very strong and allowed our swimmers to have some great battles for medals with the Singaporian Nationalists and fellow SMNE team members, with several very close finishes.Â
Team SMNE walked away with an impressive haul of 32 medals and dominated in the relays with 7 Gold & 1 Silver:
14 Gold
12 Silver
6 Bronze
The team finished 2nd on the medal tally despite only being permitted to have 2 foreign swimmers into each final.Â
SMNE development Coordinator and team member Luke Bibby said; “this trip has successfully provided our older athletes the race opportunity they needed to help them realise their potential. Racing overseas can be the little boost that helps you break into the Australian team as it is extremely competitive in Australia.
Each athlete has exceeded expectations for this week with everyone lifting for the team relays, individual events, supporting our finalists and the team in general.
We will definitely look to support more of these opportunities in the future.
The team would like to express its thanks the SMNE board for their support of the trip and to Nick Dobson and Justin Rothwell for their help behind the scenes.“
A huge thank you to @singapore_aquatics for hosting us – we look forward to returning!
SMNE contributed over $7,000 towards athlete support of the trip.
